FAQ’s about HaLove – Kosher Organic Milk
What’s the problem?
Qu: What’s the big deal about Organic?
Answer: HaLove Organic Milk is delicious, it’s not homogenized, high in Omega 3 Essential Fatty Acids, natural butterfat and protein. Higher in vitamins A, D & E, Beta Carotene, antioxidants & minerals than water.
“It has also been found that organic milk contains 71 per cent higher levels of omega 3 fatty acids (and other beneficial elements) than non-organic milk. Omega 3 fatty acids are said to have benefits in combatting arthritis and for the brain development of unborn children, among other things.“ Read More…
In our milk there are no traces of nasty pesticides:
“Our cows graze land that is not sprayed with artificial chemical fertilisers or herbicides, fungicides or pesticides.
At the heart of organic farming is the idea of working with – not against – natural systems… organic farmers avoid them.
Instead, we use bugs as natural pest controllers and use natural techniques, such as crop rotation, to fertilise, grow and keep the land nutrient rich.
We also sow nitrogen-fixing crops such as clover, which naturally increases fertility in soil. Along with active habitat management, this encourages micro-organisms and earthworms, which keep the soil healthy. As a result, we can use less chemicals, which helps keep watercourses clean.
Thus when you buy organic milk you can be assured that it’s pure and natural, and naturally pure. “ http://www.organicmilk.co.uk/pesticides-and-chemicals-2/
What about antibiotics?
“Many non-organic, intensive farms use antibiotics to prevent possible infection, which can damage productivity. There is growing evidence that the routine use of antibiotics is linked to emergence of superbugs in animals, with potential long term unknown consequences for humans. For this reason, we never routinely use antibiotics on our farms.
Organic farming doesn’t go in for quick fixes and we don’t agree with treating animals with antibiotics unless they actually need them – just like humans. Instead, we make sure we have the right breed of cows with a stronger, more-resilient immune system to tackle infection and disease, and, where possible, explore the use of alternative medicines, such as homeopathy.
If our cows do get ill, their welfare and wellbeing are our top priority, and – although we aim to stay away from antibiotics – we will use them when it is absolutely necessary. We would never compromise the welfare of our animals.
If we do treat a cow with an antibiotic, she is milked separately and we test her milk to ensure all traces of the medicine have gone before we bring her back into the herd. Organic regulations require us to keep the cow’s milk out of the supply chain two or three times longer than non-organic rules, to guarantee the milk is free of antibiotics.“ – See Ian on OMSCo’s Offical Website: OrganicMilk.co.uk
You also wont find any traces of tractors, veterinary medication, rubber ducks, genetically modified soya, expensive jewellery, grains or milk producing female hormones fed to the cows. See our page if you want more information about the Benefits of Kosher Organic Milk.
Qu: Is it Chalov Yisroel?
Answer: Yes 100% Supervised Chalov Yisroel Organic Milk – watched from milking to bottling.
Qu: What level of Shemira do you require in your supervision of Halove milk?
Answer: The supervision is strictly Chalov Yisroel, from milking to bottling by a frum community volunteers. Watching milk is not a difficult job, once all the correct procedures are in place.
All of the cows are treated well, grass feed, they are healthy and NONE of them have had ANY surgery, which would make them potentially treif. see: http://www.oukosher.org/index.php/articles/single_print/8406
None of them routinely suffer from Mastitis which could potentially mix visible blood into the milk -
“Prevention is better than cure and that means spending a bit more time, care and attention at every step of the farming process. To prevent infections such as mastitis, which can be transmitted after contact with the milking machine, we hand-clean the cows’ teats and make sure each machine is thoroughly cleaned after every round of milking.“ – Ian again on the Official Omsco Website: http://www.organicmilk.co.uk/our-milking-routine/
None of them are given artificial female hormones to help them lactate, none of them are routinely given antibiotics, (See Above) none of their calves are aborted or killed at birth, none of them are farmed intensively, or live in doors (all of which are not a karshus issues but moral, ethical and halachic issues nonetheless) See Rabbi Shmuly Yanklowitz‘s article titled “How Kosher is your Milk?” .
All the equipment is cleaned thoroughly with a mild organically approved disinfectant which is Sodium Hydroxide (caustic salt) based, between Chalov stam and the Chalov Yisroel batch, this includes all the milking tubes, collection tank and pasteurizing machine etc.
The pasteurizer, is cleaned at 83-85 Degrees with the Sodium Hydroxide (caustic salt) based cleaner. Then not used for 24 hours. Then rinsed and run though with water which reaches 62 Degrees and after each use the pasteurizer is cleaned at 62 Degrees with caustic salts.
There is no Chametz allowed in the dairy or in the bottling plant, this is not just our own law, stipulated in our contract but also the FSA’s own rulings.
Only the shomer has access to the Kosher Labels and we have a legally binding contract with the dairy that they can not sell any of their regular milk as kosher.
1. All of the animals are Kosher – with no Chashash of (DA) Trief cows at all
2. All the equipment is cleaned thoroughly with caustic salt and left for 24hours between Chalov Stam and Chalov Yisroel.
3. The milk is supervised by a shomer shabbos Jew from milking to bottling and even delivery (in Manchester)
4. The milk is healthier than standard milk
5. There is no Tzar Baali Chayim whatsoever
6. The dairy farmers are given a fair price for their milk
I hope this in some way demonstrates that HaLove Milk is Halachicly Superior with regards to Kashrus than any other milk in the UK.

Qu. How long does it last?
Answer: 16 days in the fridge, although the “best before” date is only 5 days for legal reasons.
Qu. How can it last that long?
Answer: Cows are real Animals, who live in muddy fields, with poo and flies, and their udders often get dirty, which includes the bacteria, the FSA, have an acceptable level of bacteria in milk, but the more bacteria in the milk – even at ‘acceptable’ levels still makes the milk go bad. In Emma’s Organic Dairy, they spend just as much time washing down, sterilising and cleaning the cows udders, as they do in milking them.
“…we hand-clean the cows’ teats and make sure each machine is thoroughly cleaned after every round of milking.“
And because of this strict hygiene routine, Emma’s Dairy has one of the lowest bacteria count in England according to the FSA monitor!
The FSA monitor our bactoscan which is an indication of how clean the milk is regards ingested dirt and muck. The allowed bactoscan in the UK is 100 (see the figures for the UK average here).
“We currently average 20 which is a very clean score. The milk bacteria are all intact and present, the test is really concentrating on cow poo rather than good bacteria in the milk.” – Ian O’Reilly 2012
Qu. Can you home freeze the milk?
Answer: Yes you can, but because the milk isn’t Homoginised, we would generally advise against it, because when you freeze whole milk the milk fat seems to separate and you get tinny little bits of milk fat floating in your milk.
Qu. Is your milk Raw?
Answer: It’s currently illegal to sell raw milk to the general public – with out them ordering it from the dairy. So, if you specifically want Raw Kosher Organic Milk, please state clearly in your order and contact via our contact page, when you order from us, we then pass your request to the dairy and we’ll deliver your Kosher Organic Raw Milk to your door! So, unless otherwise stated the regular HaLove milk is Pasteurised!
Qu. Can you just confirm that your cows are tested for TB?
Answer:Yes, the cows are tested for TB, this is a standard requirement by the FSA and we wouldn’t be able to be registered to sell raw milk with out it.
